Transfer of Chandigarh DGP is a loud and clear message from Central Government?

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Surendra Singh Yadav as Deputy Inspector General in the Border Security Force (BSF) on deputation basis, relieving him from the post of Chandigarh Director General of Police (DGP) with immediate effect. Surendra Singh Yadav, a 1997-batch IPS officer, had been serving as the Police Chief in Chandigarh since March last year. Yadav was promoted to the ADGP grade in 2022. However, a senior MHA official said the fresh appointment sends a message to several officers in different states who, even though they are Additional Director General (ADG) or Inspector General (IG) in the state, but yet to be empanelled at the central level. There are several officers posted as ADG and IG in different states, but they are not empanelled for the same posts at the Centre. The appointment hints at the Centre’s policy towards such cases. Yadav was not empanelled for a senior rank at the Centre, which have prompted his appointment at the DIG level in BSF. His posting has been done at the rank of DIG due to a new rule that says DIG in state will be eligible to join as DIG in Centre also. However, a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) is significantly junior post compared to a Director General of Police (DGP) in the Indian Police Service (IPS) hierarchy.
